Tourist Safety in South Africa: Experience the Best of a Vibrant Destination

By Lumka Shabalala

Is South Africa Safe?

In our experience, and the experiences of so many others who have been on a tour with us, South Africa is no more nor less dangerous than most popular tourist destinations around the world. With over 31+ years in the tourism business, we have proudly hosted countless guests without any safety concerns. Our secret? Embracing the essence of Ubuntu, the philosophy of respect and community.

South Africans are often described as the friendliest and most helpful people of anywhere visitors have ever encountered. From bustling cities to picturesque landscapes, South Africa offers a wide range of experiences that showcase its vibrant culture, rich history, and breathtaking natural beauty.

As a reasonably wealthy nation, South Africa boasts a highly functional tourism infrastructure, providing visitors with well-established accommodations, transportation options, and a plethora of attractions. However, it is important to acknowledge the social challenges the country faces, including poverty and inequality, which can sometimes lead to desperation and small-scale crime.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable trip, we encourage you to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions while exploring South Africa. Here are some essential safety tips:

Tips

Government travel warnings.

Stay Informed:

Research your destination, including local customs, areas to avoid, and any recent safety advisories. Stay updated on current events through reliable sources.

Secure Your Belongings:

Keep your valuables, including passports, cash, and electronics, in a secure place. Consider using a money belt or a hidden pouch to deter pickpockets.

Blend In:

Avoid displaying conspicuous signs of wealth and try to dress modestly. This helps you blend in with the local population and reduces the chances of becoming a target for thieves.

Use Reliable Transportation:

Opt for reputable transportation services and licensed taxis. If possible, book your transportation in advance or ask your accommodation to arrange it for you.

Be Mindful of Your Surroundings:

Stay alert in crowded places, especially tourist hotspots. Avoid flaunting expensive items and be cautious of your surroundings, especially in unfamiliar areas or at night.

Stay Connected:

Share your itinerary and contact details with a trusted person back home. Consider purchasing a local SIM card or using international roaming to stay connected in case of emergencies.

Rick Ross in South Africa:

A local musician invited the world famous Rick Ross to see his grandmother and shoot a music video in the dusty streets of his hometown of Katlehong.

Is the food and drink safe in South Africa?

South African food, in our opinion, is truly the tastiest on the continent. But don’t just take our word for it – try the delectable lunch at Ikhaya Lempilo and let your taste buds be the judge. The diverse culinary scene in South Africa offers a remarkable fusion of flavors, influenced by a rich tapestry of cultures and traditions.

Did you know that South Africa is one of the world’s largest wine-producing countries? Prepare to be amazed by the incredible selection of wines that grace the vineyards and cellars across the country. Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or simply enjoy a glass of vino, South Africa offers a wine-tasting experience like no other.

When it comes to dining and staying healthy, we recommend following the same precautions you would at home. South Africa has a well-developed healthcare system and maintains high standards of food safety. However, it’s always a good idea to exercise caution and ensure your meals are prepared hygienically.

Tap water in major towns and cities is generally safe to drink, but it’s advisable to check with locals or your accommodation before doing so. Alternatively, you’ll find bottled water readily available throughout the country, allowing you to stay hydrated while exploring the wonders of South Africa.

Is transport safe in South Africa?

Uber, Bolt, and other driving apps are fantastic options for exploring major cities affordably. It’s worth noting that some local cabs may not have meters, so it’s a good idea to negotiate a fare beforehand to avoid any unexpected expenses.

If you’re traveling to Johannesburg, the Gautrain is a wonderful and secure way to reach the captivating Capital City of Pretoria. Additionally, if you’re heading back to the airport, you’ll be delighted to know that it’s just a convenient hour-long trip from the airport to Johannesburg and then onwards to Pretoria.

As you navigate the city, you might come across locals utilizing minibus taxis, typically Toyota minibusses. While this can be an exciting option for adventurous travelers, we highly recommend embarking on our Taxi Tour first. It will provide you with a valuable opportunity to familiarize yourself with the nuances of this transportation method. We understand that local public transport can be somewhat complex for first-time visitors, but with a little guidance, you’ll be able to navigate it like a pro.

Other Safety Concerns

It is amusing how often our guests ask about predators like lions and leopards roaming freely in the streets throughout the country, but sadly or lucky for us game is usually confined to protected reserves. Staying safe on a safari is simple – listen carefully to the advice given to you by your tour guide or ranger, don’t venture into the bush at night, and stay in your car on self-drive safaris.

Unlike many African countries, South Africa is largely free from exotic diseases like dengue fever and West Nile virus. Most cities, parks, and reserves are malaria-free, although there is a small risk of infection in the far north of the country. If you do plan on visiting this area, anti-malaria prophylactics are an effective way of avoiding the mosquito-borne disease. Tap water is generally safe to drink and there are no special vaccines required. HIV/ AIDS is prevalent but easily avoided with the correct precautions.

In rural areas however, the roads are unfenced and livestock is known to gather on the roads at night. Thus, it would be a good idea to plan long journeys for daylight hours.
