Our Founder & Legacy
Imbizo Tours was founded in 1994 by Mandy Mankazana, the first Black female tour operator in South Africa. Born in Rockville, Soweto, Mandy stood on the front lines of the protests against apartheid’s oppressive laws. After overcoming the hardships of apartheid, she found strength in tourism as a space to forgive, heal, and build cross-cultural connections. Her vision was to showcase Soweto’s vibrant culture while creating lasting, sustainable economic opportunities for the local community.
