About Soweto: From History to Modernity, Uncover the Essence of Soweto
The name Soweto, derived from the acronym South West Townships, has a rich history dating back to 1905. Originally, the Johannesburg City Council relocated black residents from this area to a place 20km southwest of Johannesburg. In 1948, with the implementation of the Group Areas Act by the National Party, black population groups were forcibly moved from inner Johannesburg areas to Soweto.
Today, Soweto is a vibrant city with over 2 million inhabitants and significant infrastructure development. It boasts world-class shopping malls, including the renowned Maponya Mall, as well as parks, recreational facilities, numerous restaurants, B&Bs, the newly opened Soweto Theatre, and the University of Johannesburg Soweto campus. Explore the dynamic and evolving landscape of Soweto, where history meets modernity.
